The village of Hatun (Khatyn) were brutally destroyed by the Nazi in the course of WWII. This is an absolutely must-see to any who are visiting Belarus and are interested in WWII History, or just want to pay homage to the victims of Nazism.
Walking down the former central street of the village you will hear the story of the village whose population of 149 was burnt alive in the communal barn. The tragedy was relayed by three survivors. Different sections of the memorial are dedicated to different aspects of WWII History – you will learn about destruction of towns and cities, mass killings of the Soviet civilians and POWs, Nazi camp system in Belarus, and, finally – its liberation by the Red Army. The whole tour is very emotional.
To water down the gloomy atmoshphere of the first part, the second part of the tour is dedicated to the liberation of Belarus from the Nazi occupants by the Red Army, that came in July 1944. You will be able to walk up the hand-filled Mound of Glory and to take amazing photos on real recovered WWII – IS2 "Joseph Stalin" and T-34. You will see the massive stone monument on the hill - built shortly after war, and under which is one of the thousands mass graves of unnamed soldiers, who has fallen during the Battle for Belarus.
