Moscow State University is Russia’s oldest educational institution. Its glorious academic traditions have spawned a great variety of famous alumni, such as: Mikhail Gorbachev, Boris Pasternak, Mikhail Lermontov, and Anna Politkovskaya. The university, named after a prominent 18-th century Russian scientist Mikhail Lomanosov, has grown into the soul of Moscow, and has also become an inextricable part of its landscape.

The university was built as one of the Seven Sisters, high-risers thought up by Joseph Stalin to catch up with the sky-scraping capitalist West. Its grand appearance reminds of the continuity between Moscow as the main city of both Russian and Soviet empires. Its splendor-oozing  interior reveals the intricate workings of an apparatus that has forged the city and country’s elite.
